Scientist at the Belgian Institute for Space Aeronomy.2000-2005: Director at the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology in Hamburg, Germany and Professor at the Universities of Hamburg. 2002-2005: Scientific Director of the German Climate Computer Center. 2002-2005: Chair of the Scientific Committee of the International Geosphere Biosphere Programme (IGBP). 2002-2004: President of the Atmospheric Sciences Section of the American Geophysical Union. 2006-2007: Coordinating Lead Author for the fourth Assessment Report (WG-1) of the International Panel for Climate Change (IPCC; awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize). 2006 to 2009: Associate Director of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and Head of the Earth and Sun Systems Laboratory. 2009-2013: Director of the Climate Service Center (CSC) in Hamburg, Germany. 2014-present: Senior Scientist Max Planck Institute for Meteorology and Distinguished Scholar at NCAR. 2018-2020: Associate Director NCAR and Director Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratory.
